TIG Chair

Karen Peterman is the President of Karen Peterman Consulting, Co. (KPC), a small research and evaluation firm basd in Durham, North Carolina. KPC provides external evaluation services to those working with STEM education projects. The company also conducts research on evaluation methods and public engagement in science activities. Karen has almost twenty years of experience in the evaluation field. During that time she has conducted evaluation of or research on projects funded by AAAS, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, ED, the Glaxo Smith Klein Foundation, IMLS, NASA, NIH, NSF, and the Pisces Foundation. Dr. Peterman received her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Duke University in 2002. She worked at Goodman Research Group, Inc. (GRG). from 2002-2007. Karen began working as an independent contractor in 2007 and founded KPC in 2010.

TIG Chair (Incoming)

Jason Ravitz is founder of Evaluation by Design LLC. He has 25+ years experience driving strategy, implementation, insights and impact measurement for educational technology leaders. He started as a social studies and computer teacher before joining the National School Network project at BBN Educational Technologies and pursuing a Ph.D. in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation. This led to a career conducting state and national studies and creating tools and strategies for educational programs. Jason has produced research on project-based learning and 21st century teaching as Director of Research for the Buck Institute for Education; on evaluation capacity building and STEM-CS education as Senior Program Manager and Education Outreach Evaluation Manager for Google; and on school coaching as Senior Research Scientist at Digital Promise. He has a B.A. from Harvard College, a Ph.D, from Syracuse University, and completed postdoctoral positions at UC, Irvine and UC, Berkeley/SRI International.

Program Chair

Cherie Avent is a PhD student at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in the department of Education Research Methodology. Her concentration is program evaluation. Throughout her doctoral studies, she has served as a graduate research assistant working on various education evaluation projects, such a grant between the Department of Education and UNCG titled Transforming Teaching Through Technology and a grant between the National Science Foundation and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign titled Hierarchical Nanomanufacturing. Her experiences as an evaluator, coupled with previous teaching experience has informed her research focus of social justice, language/communication, and STEM educational evaluation context.

Ginger Fitzhugh is a Senior Research Associate at Education Development Center. She has over 15 years of experience in conducting evaluations that help programs leverage knowledge to achieve better outcomes for young people. She has led a number of evaluations of programs aimed at increasing the diversity of the STEM workforce, and has specific expertise in evaluations of projects funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA. Her degrees are from Swarthmore College and the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.

Founding Member of TIG; Kimberle Kelly, PhD With nearly 30 years of experience in university, school district, and non-profit settings, Kim is a seasoned educator, researcher, and evaluator. She holds a PhD from the University of Southern California in Cognitive and Clinical Brain Sciences and completed a postdoc at the University of California, Los Angeles in cognitive and clinical neuroscience. Her current work focuses on the intersection of collaboration and connection processes with personal health and organizational effectiveness, and the implications for social justice. Kim is a member of the founding board of the STEM Education and Training TIG in 2012, and remains an active member of TIG leadership today.

John Baek is Senior Education Evaluator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Education. As an internal evaluator, he is responsible for implementing performance monitoring and program evaluations that support STEM education programs across the agency. He brings seventeen years of experience working across the fields of educational technology, informal education, and science education research. He is also a member of the Federal STEM Education Interagency Working Group on Transparency and Accountability. He works remotely from Burlington, Vermont and serves as co-chair of the Vermont Evaluation Network.
