Who Shapes the Future? Venture Capital, Inclusion, and the Role of Data in Social Finance

Venture capital plays an outsized role in shaping the future of our economies and societies—funding many of the companies that go on to define industries and influence everyday life. Yet, it remains a relatively opaque ecosystem, with significant concentration of decision-making power and persistent gaps in who has access to capital and who benefits from it.
This session will introduce venture capital within the broader context of social finance, exploring why it matters for those working in impact measurement, evaluation, and capital allocation. Drawing on insights from Diversity VC’s 10-Year Impact Report, the conversation will examine where measurable progress has been made in improving representation within venture capital—and where structural challenges remain.
The session will also explore the role of data in driving change, including efforts to standardize diversity data collection and better understand how capital flows through the ecosystem. In addition, it will touch on emerging research around who participates as investors (limited partners), highlighting the importance of expanding access not only to funding, but to the financial upside generated by venture-backed innovation.
