Session Description: Case Study Methods allow evaluators to approach program assessment from a powerful and flexible design palette. While often heavily steeped in the use of qualitative methods, case studies also may include the use of quantitative data

Slides for "Communicating Success Case Studies in Complex Organizations" (includes presentation notes) Abstract: Success case studies can be an effective way to identify underlying patterns, relationships, and dynamics that lead to program success or failure. Identifying successful cases is especially important in complex evaluations, such as Clinical and Translational Science Awards, where successes are definitionally complex and often do not develop in linear or predictable ways. For success case studies to be fully effective, however, evaluators need to find innovative ways to communicate them to diverse stakeholders, who may see them as simply anecdotes or unconnected “stories.” In this talk, we will discuss different approaches we have used at the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) for presenting success case studies to CTSC leadership, advisory boards, and the broader campus community

Includes materials from both presentations. Case study method has enormous potential to inform evaluations of school- and district-based educational programs specifically, as the institution of public schools in the United States represents a unique and diverse structure that compels careful consideration of contextual limitations and opportunities. This session will draw on implementation studies of two school-based initiatives to illustrate how the choice and execution of case study method can enhance the rigor of education research, particularly in a climate of increasing accountability and pressure to produce improved academic outcomes. In this era of high stakes assessments and outcomes-focused research and policy, it is important not to lose sight of the contributions that in-depth implementation research can provide. Case study research is an important approach to capturing the contextual factors specific to implementation of educational programs, and thereby enhancing the applicability of findings from outcome evaluations
This session explores how case studies can be used to document the process and outcomes of community health initiatives to showcase the work being done in the community and serve as a model for others taking on similar work. Presenters will focus on three different case studies recently completed for the Minnesota’s Statewide Health Improvement Program grant in rural Cottonwood, Jackson, Faribault, Martin and Watonwan Counties. The agency embarked on the case study process to document program successes and lessons learned, and to inform other agencies doing similar work across the nation. Case studies were completed for initiatives that aimed to create healthier worksites and increasing physical activity in schools. In this session, presenters will share why case studies were used and their experiences designing instruments, collecting data, and creating case study reports

This presentation addressed sharing evaluation results as storytelling. While the data collection and findings stay constant, the ways evaluators share the results make a difference. Typically, "stories" that emerge from evaluation results follow instrumental logic that enhances the process of...
