To Rank Colleges or Not? Complexities & Limitations of Existing Higher Ed Data

10-13-2014 13:39

Evaluation 2014 Poster. Even with recent increases in state longitudinal education databases (SLDS), and continual improvements to the federal higher education data collections, the available data for assessing college and university outcomes are typically not comprehensive or nuanced enough to develop appropriate measures of the value of college. WICHE's Multistate Longitudinal Data Exchange pilot project enlisted Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington to participate in assessing the feasibility of linking student-level data across different state longitudinal data systems (SLDS) and state labor department systems. The poster summarizes results from the four-state combined dataset covering 192,689 students--Class of 2005 high school graduates or first-time college undergraduates at public colleges or universities in these states during the 2005-06 academic year--and their participation in postsecondary education, degree completion, employment, and geographic mobility through 2011.
