The Colorado Trust’s Healthy Communities Initiative: Comprehensive Community Initiatives

03-13-2009 14:37

Ross Conner, Ph.D., Doug Easterling, Ph.D.

The Colorado Healthy Communities Initiative (CHCI) was conceived and funded by The Colorado Trust to engage community residents in developing locally relevant strategies to improve health. CHCI emphasized (a) inclusive, representative planning; (b) a broad definition of "health"; (c) consensus decision making; and (d) capacity building. The 29 communities implemented an array of projects, many of which had a long-term impact. Key success factors included expertly facilitated planning; a unifying "healthy community" vision; a willingness by stakeholders to work collaboratively to define "key performance areas" and to implement projects to achieve them; and an appropriate level of funding for implementation.
