Sustainable Development? Prove It! Improve It! (Session #1577)

12-05-2017 17:25

In international development, project outcomes sustainability has always been a planning priority. Yet in practice, post project evaluation is rare. Valuing Voices received a grant from Michael Scriven’s Faster Forward Fund to demonstrate the value added of post-project evaluation, by comparing final versus post-project results. Jindra Cekan and Laurie Zivetz of Valuing Voices will share:

  1. A comparative analysis of eight final and post project evaluations.   Were predictions about sustainability trajectories validated years later? What were unanticipated and emerging outcomes? What methodological approaches did evaluators adopt and what challenges were encountered?
  2. Checklists for assessing i) the evaluability of doing a post project evaluation and ii) tracking sustainability through the project cycle.
  3. Amazing challenges faced in identifying just eight evaluations.

Commentators Cynthia Clapp-Wincek and Michael Bamberger will

  1. Reflect on institutional, political and structural barriers to undertaking more post project evaluations.
  2. Discuss opportunities for such evaluations in light of the Sustainable Development Goals and intensified focus on accountability.
