Handout from the 2016 AEA Conference roundtable session. The abstract was the following: Evaluators’ roles in grantmaking organizations are changing and need to adapt to philanthropy’s needs, particularly in strategy. The notion of strategic philanthropy has strongly impacted the way that funders do their work and evaluators can be a key contributor to strategy development. Moreover, recent research has shown an expansion of evaluators’ roles to include strategic learning and contributions toward strategy development (e.g., facilitating discussions, providing information, and critiquing/evaluating strategy). This roundtable will share the learnings from Southern California Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit, a healthcare organization that supports improving community health through grantmaking and other strategies. The evaluators will share their learning with utilizing external and internal-only support in strategic planning and will facilitate a discussion with the group on their experiences. Discussion topics include experiences utilizing evaluative thinking, types of roles evaluators play, using internal and external support, and how evaluators can contribute toward good strategy in meeting community needs.
