Session ID 1561_Making values actionable: Using Principles-Focused Evaluation to implement an ecological model of community-focused therapeutic recreation for children and youth with disabilities

10-21-2020 17:14

The ecological model of community-focused therapeutic recreation for children and youth with disabilities [1] is a four-part process model that outlines collaboration between service providers and community members to deliver accessible programs that increase empowerment, community participation, and social inclusion for this population.

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (HBKRH) in Toronto, Canada, is known for its accessible, inclusive, and engaging recreation programs for children and youth with physical disabilities and other special needs.

To action the ecological model and implement HBKRH programs, a team of recreation program leads, managers, families with lived experience, and knowledge translation and evaluation experts used a novel evaluation method called Principles-Focused Evaluation to co-create a standardized application and screening process, based on our core value of meaningful participation.

This poster will highlight project development processes, such as: stakeholder engagement, needs assessment, appreciative inquiry, complexity science, implementation and evaluation of the principles.
