Kubisch, M.P.I.A., Stacey Sutton, Ph.D. There are six key roles for philanthropic organizations’ engagement in communities: convening and leveraging diverse networks of relationships, developing local data and plans for community change, leveraging new resources on behalf of communities, mobilizing political will, framing new messages about community development and communicating strategically, and generating and testing new ideas and building and sharing knowledge. Investments in civic capacity may help communities access resources and gain political voice. Civic work sometimes requires foundations to take greater risks, to put their own name and credibility on the line in order to advance a cause, and to support less powerful partners.
