Literature reviews are essential in many evaluation projects to document major themes, methods, and findings from an inter-related body of work. Reviews have evolved from narrative summaries , systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Today literature reviews are evolving through the use of data visualization tools that allow us to map various aspects of a body of past research. These new tools allow us to see and understand relationships among research themes and methods in ways that can be more quickly apprehended than traditional narrative summaries. A new data visualization tool called IN-SPIRE offers a way of mapping sets of narrative documents that can offer new insights into their themes and inter-relationships. IN-SPIRE is being used at the National Institutes of Health to map research publications and portfolios. We illustrate its application in a study of recent literature in science communication.#2013Conference #descriptivecasestudy #INSPIRE #DataVisualizationandReporting #literaturereviews
