Interprofessional Specialty Care: Understanding and Evaluating New Models of Care In a Complex Medical System

11-06-2014 17:23

In 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) funded three Centers in Specialty Care Education to include trainees in medicine, nursing, and associated health in interprofessional care, shared decision-making, and performance improvement. To address the unique difficulties in evaluating three centers diverse in disease area, trainee type, and educational approach, we used a mixed-methods design to describe program changes and trainee impact. Qualitative methods permitted the identification of unique site-level factors critical to the success of an innovative educational intervention situated in a complex medical system that recently transitioned to the medical home model. Cross-site quantitative measures permitted feedback to sites and comparisons between sites and over time within-site. In this presentation, we describe the logic model and methods used to describe the evolution of a new model of specialty care education and plans for expansion into a phase 2 of funding specialty care education centers.
