Perceived Barriers & Supports for Implementing Standards-Based Reform by Hannah L. Gbenro. Presented in Session # PreK8, Making a Change - Evaluating School and School Systems Reform, Friday Nov 13th at 8 a.m. (Grand Suite 2A/B). HannahGbenro@gmail.com Paper & Presentation Attached Abstract: This study is unique in that it focuses on the implementation of standards-based education at the high school level within a district implementing a full, K-12 standards-based system (instruction, assessment, grading, & curriculum). Available literature refers to schools/districts implementing some, but not all, of these components. This study also provides a framework for evaluating standards-based reform. Reform efforts are proliferating within educational systems across the country with Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and similar reforms. Concurrent models of evaluation must be created to address the unique needs of standards-based reform processes in the 21st century. Lessons learned from this study and the evaluation of standards-based reform is essential to evaluators. The field of standards-based education reform will benefit from similar ongoing studies that enhance the knowledge on the barriers and success to implementation.
