Foundation Readiness for Community Transformation: Learning in Real Time

03-13-2009 15:35

Prudence Brown, Ph.D., Marie Colombo, M.A., Della M. Hughes, M.S.S.W.
The Skillman Foundation invested in its own and its partners’ capacities to learn as they began work with six Detroit, Mich., neighborhoods. Challenges included pressure for measurable outcomes; staff workload; and difficulties keeping communications consistent among foundation staff, board, intermediaries, and grantees. To align internal structures with goals, program officer job descriptions were changed, work hours were flexible, new positions (Knowledge Management and Special Projects Officers) were created, and a consent agenda was used with the board to streamline grantmaking. A "learning team" used a logic model to foster ongoing capacity building, leading to greater clarity about activities and intended results.
