A key challenge with using existing qualitative program data in a formative evaluation is the volume of data to code, categorize, and summarize. When data are nested within sites, there are additional challenges with determining the prevalence of experiences across all sites, across program types, and across locations. During this session, the challenges of a recent formative evaluation project will be presented, along with the resulting methodology, which resulted in useful data summaries for program administrators and program staff. Specifically, the tools and processes for organizing data for efficient and systematic coding and summary will be demonstrated, such that participants can apply the methodology to their own work using their existing software tools.#2014Conference
