10-19-2012 12:21

Evaluators and applied researchers may be well versed in academic research processes, but uncertain about how to handle the entrepreneurial and small business management skills needed to be successful independent consultants. For those aspiring to have a thriving practice, this workshop addresses common problems encountered in the day-to-day running of a small consulting business and identifies some of the key issues faced by consultants. Through discussion, lecture, anecdote, independent reflection and teamwork, this workshop will help participants problem solve around the ongoing challenges of a consulting practice. For those looking to fine-tune their current professional practice, a seasoned practitioner/award winner/author will share from her more than two decades of experience. This course may go hand-in-hand with Getting Started, geared toward those contemplating the prospect of going into independent consulting. You will learn: How to manage multiple projects; How to find fresh approaches to marketing; How to deal with the contract blues; How to avoid burnout and foster personal growth. Gail Barrington is a top-rated trainer and has more than 25 years of practical experience running her own consulting practice, Barrington Research Group, Inc. Her recent book, Consulting Start up & Management: A Guide for Evaluators & Applied Researchers, (SAGE, 2012) is based on the many workshops on consulting skills that she has offered over the years. In 2008, she won the Canadian Evaluation Society award for her Contribution to Evaluation in Canada.
