The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a free, six-week residential science enrichment program offered to rising college sophomores and juniors of minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged background who are interested in attending medical or dental school. This presentation provides an overview of the final evaluation report which describes program implementation across sites and measures the effect of the program on students’ outcomes using a quasi-experimental design. Among other key findings, the evaluation found that the majority of SMDEP participants stay on the path to a potential career in health, but program effectiveness varies by type of program offerings and important implementation characteristics such as program leadership approach and faculty stability. Our findings have implications for the efficacy of similar programs aimed at diversifying the health and STEM pipeline.
