Best Practices + Adaptive Evaluation = Improved Grantmaking

12-07-2016 14:08

How do foundations create meaningful and realistic evaluations that capture progress toward strategic goals? How does an evaluation design process incorporate best practices in the field and foundation strengths? How can an evaluation limit the burden on grantees? How does an evaluation incorporate insights that foundation staff have about grantmaking? How does an evaluation meaningfully capture progress toward achieving equity? This session explores how one foundation leveraged core values, strong grantee-program director relationships, and staff expertise to develop an adaptive evaluation and learning approach. Based on developmental evaluation, Cal Wellness’ evaluation is organized into four phases: 1) Identify, 2) Test, 3) Document, and 4) Learn/Adapt. We will discuss how the approach built on foundation strengths (and best practices) to identify grantmaking criteria and indicators for multiple audiences and timeframes.
