AEA 2019 - Measuring university practices and leadership: Rigorous development of a rubric to assess physics teacher education programs

11-18-2019 11:24

Presentation at AEA 2019. Abstract:

Sustainable change of educational practices in universities requires a systems view. Projects aiming to promote educational change would often benefit from being able to assess such systemic elements of higher education, such as institutional commitment, effective leadership, collaboration across units, use of effective educational practices, and continual assessment. This talk describes a rubric (the Physics Teacher Education Program Analysis Rubric) which was developed for the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) to assess a myriad of such systemic components that are important for physics departments preparing future physics teachers. I will describe how we defined the scope of the rubric, developed the rubric and its’ descriptive levels through detailed site visits, and the productive collaboration with the client that led to a rigorous, useful rubric for an entire community in physics education.

We acknowledge funding from NSF-0808790, NSF-1707990 and APS’s 21st Century Campaign. See http://phystec.org/THRIVING for the rubric and report.
