Session Abstract:

Data has power and by extension evaluators have power. People on every side of social and political debates use data points to support their positions. Evaluators have a responsibility to consider how data we share may be interpreted in ways that reinforce bias. In this skill-building workshop, we will learn skills for evaluating ourselves and our own biases. We will discuss how using asset-based language vs. deficit-based language can change how data is interpreted. We will learn how asking the right questions can change the conversation from one about simple demographics to one about addressing disparities and creating equity. With the goal of using our platform as evaluators to advance justice conversations, we will explore the complex, intersection between data and evaluation and racial justice.
