Evaluation 2020

session 2142: Developing Empathy: How the Evaluator-Funder Relationship Can Foster Equitable, Inclusive, and Empathetic Practices in Developmental Evaluation

10-22-2020 16:49

IN 2019, THE HARTFORD FOUNDATION FOR PUBLIC GIVING established a $100,000 fund for each of the 29 towns in its service area. These funds will be distributed by the Hartford Foundation through an inclusive and participatory process led by an Advisory Committee made up of town residents that truly reflect their town. This poster describes supports provided by Hartford Foundation Staff to support the creation of Advisory Commmittes and grantmaking processes including the navigation of tensions between "getting to grants" and fostering inclusive community processes. It also details progress toward the creation of committees across 29 towns and explores components developed to shift power from the Foundation to the community. The poster is a artifact of a co-creative process between evaluator and funder to reflect on and present data and findings generated in a developmental evaluation -- particularly surfacing tensions that had to be negotiated and balanced throughout the first year of a participatory grantmaking project implementation.
