Photovoice: A method for college students to snap and chat what’s intriguing about field trips

11-13-2017 16:59

Presented November 10, 2017 at the Annual Conference of the American Evaluation Association in Washington, DC.
This paper presents the qualitative method “photovoice,” which is participatory action research and a tool applied to informal learning experiences, such as field trips, to capture what students consider important, meaningful, or interesting (Berendt & Machtmes, 2016). Here photovoice was used to evaluate the perceptions and impressions of college students who participated in field trips of the SHIP-GEO Stimulating Hispanic Participation in Geosciences, project of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences (EEM), which is intended to attract majors and careers in geosciences. This presentation offers an alternative and timely method for studying informal educational initiatives.
