Presented at the 2016 AEA Conference by Sarah Singer and Andrew Hayman, of Hezel Associates, this roundtable session examined the importance of incorporating the topic of program sustainability into evaluation activities, common challenges that occur, and potential solutions to address those challenges. Presenters drew from experiences with higher education clients, in which post-grant funding for sustainability of a program, or some of its components, was in question. The critical importance of starting this discussion with implementers at the evaluation design phase was highlighted, but methods of integrating the question of sustainability into the evaluation later in the process was also considered. Session participants shared their experiences and a discussion was held that helped to frame the subject, as well as determine useful tactics and solutions to help evaluators design studies that help implementers work towards continuing their programs after grant funding ends.
