As a special theme in the State of Scientific Research in Finland 2016 review, we considered the different types of impact arising from research-based knowledge and expertise, and the pathways through which impacts come about. The review was based on a comparative case study that combined qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as on the current understanding of research impact in the literature. The case study focused on four different research fields that provide a reasonably inclusive picture of the ways in which academic research is linked and contributes to the surrounding society. In this presentation we highlight our findings, discuss the suitability of our approach for future assessments and how this study contributes to the broader understanding of the role of scientific research in society.

Sitra is an independent think-and-do tank that promotes Finland's competitiveness and well-being of the Finnish people. Behind Sitra’s future-oriented work, there is a strong vision of Finland as a successful pioneer of sustainable well-being. In Sitra, we have carried out evaluations to support strategic management and development, also to strengthen interaction with stakeholders about the ways to successfully promote sustainable well-being. In our impact evaluation, we exploit an approach that considers the dynamic and complex environment in which we operate, and the systemic nature and long timescale of societal changes that we pursue. This paper presents the recent evaluations that especially focus on analyzing the contribution of Sitra, studying also the progress of sustainable well-being and mechanisms for impact in the society. In the presentation, we discuss the use and relevance of the methods and results, and illustrate central learnings.

Tekes is the most important publicly funded expert organisation for financing research, development and innovation projects of companies in Finland. Tekes boosts wide-ranging innovation activities in research communities, industry and service sectors. In Tekes, main evaluation theories has been both additionality and the logic models, but lately we have added more flexible evaluation practises to our impact model. Therefore, we have reformed a timespan of evaluations that utilize online methods by helping the utilization of results to redesign the goals continuously. The paper shows theoretical implications of various finished and on-going evaluations, which base on continuous evaluation methods and road maps of several instruments and thematic impact pathways. The paper emphasize what are the most useful theoretical implications that help end-users to find practical tools to analyze continuously the Tekes interventions parallel with Tekes impact goals.
