Eval12 Session 183: Using Prochaska's Transtheoretical Model to Evaluate an Entertainment-Educational Intervention on Healthy Eating and Active Living Behaviors

10-29-2012 16:02

Presentation Abstract: Prochaska’s Transtheoretical Model, also known as the Stages of Change Model, commonly used to develop interventions in the health promotion field, was used as a framework to evaluate an entertainment-education intervention targeting the healthy eating and active living behaviors of Colorado’s Spanish-speaking Latino community. Using a mixed-methods design, a survey was developed to collect behavioral and attitudinal data while rich qualitative data were collected through a series of five panel sessions to assess the impact of Encrucijada, Sin Salud No Hay Nada (Crossroads, There Is Nothing Without Health), a 24-episode soap opera series. The presentation described the factors involved in the preparation of a survey to collect attitude and behavioral data based on the stages of change and the elements of the processes of change, decisional balance, and self-efficacy of the Transtheoretical model. Results of this portion of the evaluation were also presented, as well as challenges encountered to measure the indicators targeted by the intervention.
