Can't You Count? Using Numbers in Qualitative Evaluations

11-12-2018 12:58

These are the slides from Evaluation 2018 conference roundtable: "Can't You Count? Using Numbers in Qualitative Evaluations," facilitated by Jerome Gallagher and Jennifer Kuzara.

Session Description: When qualitative evaluators conduct focus groups and interviews, we usually want to understand the quality of experiences as reported by the interviewees and participants. But we also care when we hear the same or similar statements made by multiple interviewees or focus group participants. Should qualitative evaluators use numbers to report the frequency of certain responses? Does that make us less of a qualitative evaluator? Should we refrain from quantification or perhaps use semi-quantification?  Evaluators and evaluations vary widely in how they use numbers in evaluations based on qualitative research. In this roundtable discussion we will present an overview of the issue of counting in qualitative evaluations based on a review of the qualitative methods literature. This will be followed by a discussion of preferences and best practices for using numbers in qualitative evaluations.
