Attached is a PDF of my presentation slides from Evaluation 2013. Please contact me directly for more information about my research on this topic. Paper abstract: Over the past decade, as educational evaluation gained prominence due to accountability initiatives in grades K-12, interest in the use of formative assessment (FA), involving teachers using evaluative skills and strategies to improve student learning, also increased. Previous research on FA has found that effect sizes of its efficacy seem promising for English/Language Arts (ELA), yet science and mathematics classes are often studied instead. This paper aims to explore the more subjective field of ELA at the secondary level to determine how FA, used as a form of classroom evaluation, is impacted in this context as opposed to more objective curricula. Differences between FA implementation, its related challenges and benefits within the different subjects, and how it is evaluated within these different contexts will be explored. Recommendations for continued study into FA’s use in more advanced, open-ended, and non-linear subjects, using secondary ELA classes as an example, will be proposed.
