Using Social Network Analysis to Understand Growth and Collaboration in the B-cell mediated HIV Vaccine Field

01-16-2015 11:22

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIAID, NIH) launched several initiatives aimed towards expanding fundamental knowledge of broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV immunogens that might lead to the development of novel HIV vaccines. These efforts were expected to stimulate growth and attract new researchers to the field, support innovative research, and foster collaborations among researchers. Social network analysis was used to examine growth in the number of researchers and collaboration among authors over the past ten years. Key researchers in these networks as determined by centrality were identified, and the evolution of these central figures over time, was observed. We also looked at agencies besides NIAID that fund research in this field and the relationships between the agencies were examined. In addition to the network analysis, a new methodology was explored to identify publications on innovative research in the B-cell mediated HIV vaccine field.
