Eval14 - Specifying and Measuring the Complex Construct "Adoption Competency"

10-24-2014 20:20

The need for “adoption competency” in mental health services has been the focus of a major Donaldson Adoption Institute report, a special double issue of the journal Adoption Quarterly, and cited in numerous studies of the needs of adoptive families. Despite broad consensus about the need for services to be “adoption competent,” the term has lacked a standardized definition and clinical practices constituting “adoption competency” have lacked specification. This paper reports on the findings from an ongoing multi-component, mixed-method evaluation of an adoption competency training program for clinicians focusing primarily on the study that examines the nature of changes in clinical practices resulting from the training. Findings are based on nearly 500 responses containing nearly 1,800 descriptions of practice changes. Beyond documenting changes resulting from the training, this study is illuminating numerous aspects of clinical practice and contributing to the specification and classification of practices associated with adoption competency.
