Providing Behavioral Health Support After Maria: Performance Review of Puerto Rico’s State Medical Command

12-19-2019 12:31

News services have reported on multiple occasions how Hurricane Maria has affected people's lives and led to a series of mental health problems. Especially the countless Puerto Ricans who continue to deal with the trauma related to the storm (NPR, 2018). Many individuals and organizations have taken an active role in mitigating and responding to this disaster, as the needs of the population surpass the infrastructure to manage them. Evaluating their performance in the field might prove to be a challenge. In this presentation, the experiences of Puerto Rico State Guard will be discussed. They are state government military organizations that are manned by volunteers. These have been established by Federal and State laws, with a mission to respond to disasters, supporting the National Guard and civil authorities, and providing an influx of health services when the infrastructure of services has been affected.
