Program Shifts Yield Intriguing Results: The Role of Veteran Peer Mentor Support

10-23-2014 21:47

Presented at the 2014 AEA Annual Meeting, this paper describes qualitative and quantitative results of investigation of the Rhode Island Alternatives to Sentencing and Trauma Recovery Project, part of a multi-state effort funded by SAMHSA to divert arrested individuals with trauma history from jail/prison, with a priority for military veterans. In RI, the establishment of a Vet Court in the 4th year of the project led to the addition of a new element in the intervention: veteran peer mentors. In this paper the roles of those mentors, based on qualitative interview data, and some early quantitative comparisons of clients with mentors to those who did not have mentors, are provided.
