Learning communities are a tool used by grant makers to support ongoing learning and sharing among grantees. Learning communities can also play a role in program evaluation. The Research team at The Oregon Community Foundation is conducting program evaluations of several grant-making Initiatives that include learning communities. These learning communities provide opportunities to collect, discuss, and make meaning of evaluation data as well as to disseminate results. Further, because the learning communities are key components of the Initiatives, the Research team is developing a framework to assess the success of those learning communities. We will use this framework to explore the dance we do in program evaluation with learning communities, including the nuanced steps involved in working from within a foundation to improve and assess its practice. Roundtable discussion will generate lessons learned and support further development of a framework for assessment of learning communities.
