Similarities and Differences Between Research and Evaluation - Simple Graphic

10-02-2010 16:41

In describing the differences and similiaries between research and evaluation, I often find it useful to use a graphic like an hour glass. It illustrates that, most often, these two forms of inquiry differ in the focusing phase of the project in terms of their purposes, audiences, and key or guiding questions, but that they may draw from a simiilar (though not identical) set of designs, approaches, data collection and analysis methods, and a commitment to reliable and valid data. However, differences in research and evaluation occur again when we interpret, and communicate and report the findings, how the findings are used and by whom, and the particular set of professional and ethical standards that apply.
