Making Your Evaluation Inclusive: A Practical Guide for Evaluation Research with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) People and Communities

11-17-2015 00:49

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people are included - but often invisible - in many evaluations. In light of increased federal attention at home and abroad to LGBT-specific data collection and the growing awareness of disparities faced by this population, evaluators must be prepared to consider how programs and policies affect LGBTQ people. However, evaluators are often at a loss for the best ways to ask about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), especially as the terminology changes over time and across contexts. This skill-building workshop will provide best practices for assessing SOGI in youth and adult populations in the United States, and will discuss effective principles for taking SOGI research abroad. Cutting-edge research on item development will be shared, giving participants concrete ways to ask questions. Participants will learn ways to make their evaluations more inclusive of sexual and gender minorities and increase their SOGI cultural competence.
